In a shocking twist that has left UK drivers wondering if they should start riding bikes or just walk naked, diesel prices have soared faster than your granny's knitting speed, jumping 6p per litre to a 16-month high. Naturally, diesel has gone rogue, rising more than petrol, proving once and for all that diesel drivers truly do have it worse – and probably deserve it.

According to the RAC, diesel's average price hit 148.4p per litre, which is just shy of the astronomical heights drivers reached when they cashed in their lottery tickets for petrol in 2022. Apparently, this chaos started after Iran got into a diplomatic slap fight with Israel and the US. The resulting oil panic has made Brent crude rocket over 23%, because nothing says geopolitical stability like a barrel flirting with $91.

Meanwhile, retailers, led by the cunning RAC head of policy Simon Williams, have been accused of profiteering. Williams sagely pointed out that fuel prices are rising despite petrol stations likely sitting on stock they bought at bargain prices before the Middle East soap opera began, suggesting their loyalty is to their wallets, not to hapless motorists. Filling up a family-sized petrol tank is now £2 more expensive, while diesel drivers should probably consider selling a kidney, their firstborn, or both, as it's now £3.30 dearer per fill-up.

Industry prophets caution that if oil doesn't calm down, expect prices to hit stratospheric levels that might invite drivers to start protesting with tea and crumpets rather than their mumbled grumbles. Adding to the doom, Qatar's energy minister theatrically predicted oil could double to $150 a barrel, implying a future where bread, petrol, and existential dread will all cost about the same.

Meanwhile, the AA productively advised no panic buying, reassuring drivers that running out of petrol during a crisis is still preferable to running out of dignity. As the UK collectively contemplates biking in rain or selling plasma to fuel their vehicles, at least the This is Money Motoring Club offers a £20 voucher, probably enough to buy a packet of crisps and a sad sigh at the petrol station. In these trying times, the only thing rising faster than diesel prices is the nation's blood pressure.
